Sky News is looking for a Data Journalist to join our pioneering Data & Forensics team. It’s a dynamic and exciting role that puts you at the heart of the biggest stories, using cutting edge data skills and eye-catching story-telling techniques. You’ll bring extra value, insight and analysis to Sky’s award-winning journalism and use your specialist knowledge to help our audiences understand our uncertain world.   

 

The Data and Forensics team is a multi-skilled unit dedicated to providing transparent journalism from Sky News. We gather, analyse and visualise data to tell data-driven stories. We combine traditional reporting skills with advanced analysis of satellite images, social media and other open-source information. Through multimedia storytelling we aim to better explain the world while also showing how our journalism is done.  

  

What you’ll do:  

  • Find, clean and analyse data to produce stories for Sky’s digital and broadcast platforms.  
  • Examine and report on published data to identify new stories or provide context, analysis and news lines on the biggest stories of the day.  
  • Pitch, develop and deliver original data-driven investigations and come up with innovative ways to present them.  
  • Work independently or alongside designers and developers to create compelling visualisations and interactives.  
  • Negotiate with public officials, businesses and academics for data and open records and gather information via Freedom of Information requests.  
  • Lead the way in explaining data journalism to our audiences.  

  

What you’ll bring:  

  • Passion, drive and a can-do approach 
  • The ability to visualise complex ideas in a clear, accurate and creative ways.  
  • A good understanding of statistics and statistical analysis.  
  • A good understanding of how to visualise data, using tools like Flourish, Datawrapper, QGIS or d3.  
  • Proficiency at writing detailed and accessible articles presenting data analysis.  
  • Strong journalistic judgment and editorial values.  
  • Understanding of Excel and Google Sheets is essential.  
  • A knowledge of programming language for data analysis, such as R, Python or SQL is preferred.  
  • Knowledge of web development programming languages like HTML/CSS and JavaScript is an advantage.
