Senior Engineer - Site Reliability

The Senior Engineer – Site Reliability is responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability and performance of our web applications. This role will work closely with development teams to ensure that our systems are designed and implemented in a way that meets the needs of our customers. The Senior Engineer will also be responsible for developing automation tools to improve system performance and reliability.

What you will do:
  • Implement System/Service metrics monitoring solutions 

  • Design, create and deliver infrastructure, code or service tools to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of our internal or customer facing services. 

  • Evangelise reliability culture (encourage collaboration and communication, encouraging blameless post-mortems) 

  • Evangelise optimisation and automation (ensure your team are engagement with other teams to reduce toil, automate processes and run-book writing) 

  • Continuously measure and monitor availability, latency, and overall system health. 

  • Work with the Customer Ops teams on triaging customer facing issues. Tracking incidents to resolution and improving overall performance and reporting of customer E2E system/platform health. 

  • Working closely with the Infrastructure and Platform development teams and take part in key decisions to help guide the teams towards scalable and maintainable solutions. 

  • Continuously update/create Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) to convert customer happiness into actionable metrics 

What you'll bring:

  • Knowledge of CI/CD (design pipelines in e.g. Concourse/Github Actions) 

  • Knowledge of Containerisation (knowledge of config and troubleshooting) 

  • Knowledge of Container Orchestration (e.g. ECS) 

  • Knowledge of Cloud Platforms (designing infrastructure deployment patterns within AWS) 

  • Knowledge of Monitoring (Design and implementation of Monitoring Solutions/ Metric Driven alerting, etc) 

  • Knowledge of Monitoring and Logging Systems (Dynatrace etc.) 

  • Knowledge of Security (knowledge of a number of practices, e.g. SSH/ SSL/ TLS/ HMac /IPS/ IDS) 

  • Knowledge of Systems architecture (high-level design) 

  • Knowledge of Microservice architecture / immutable infrastructure / Infrastructure as Code 

Team overview 

Our team is responsible for building out and maintaining the backend services that underpin the Sky Protect IoT platform. We have fully embraced the Amazon Web Services cloud stack: predominantly containerised (ECS) Ruby / Rails micro-services, a bunch of Lambda functions, IoT services and various SQS/SNS queues for pub/sub comms.
