We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a Senior News Editor to run and manage the Sky News operation in the USA from July 2025. 

The successful candidate will be based in Washington DC and will have substantial experience of field producing and management of reporting teams.

It’s a vital role in the Sky News international network, helping to deliver the very best content to audiences on our digital services and on TV. 

Sky News has three reporting teams in the USA, working from bureaux in Washington and Los Angeles. The fundamental responsibility of the role is to ensure Sky News coverage from the USA is competitive and of high quality.

  

Reporting to the Head of International News, the successful candidate will manage the reporting teams, assign them to stories, oversee production standards on all platforms and work with them as a travelling producer, including in hostile environments.

Political and geopolitical awareness is vital, but so too is an appreciation of the broad nature of the North American news agenda. Social issues, migration, climate change, crime, finance and showbusiness are all important editorial areas from which first class, distinctive coverage can be drawn. 

While the role is managed within the newsgathering department, the successful candidate will also be to show production experience across all platforms and will be able to form constructive relationships across the newsroom in order to influence output decision making. 

What you'll do:

  • Day to day editorial and staff management of Sky News teams in the USA
  • Daily contact with Sky News foreign desk to plan and execute coverage 
  • Regular travel, often at short notice when reacting to breaking news 
  • Collaboration with colleagues on coverage across Sky News platforms  
  • Producing news reports by correspondents in multiple formats, both from base and in the field
  • Staying abreast of significant political and cultural movement 
  • Briefing senior colleagues on plans, developments and special coverage 
  • Playing a key influencing role with TV and digital production staff to ensure we are making the  most of our content  
  • Management of travel, budget and logistics 
  • Representing Sky News with key contacts and stakeholders 
  • Close co-operation with colleagues from NBC News, for mutual advantage
  • Investing in long form and other innovative broadcast and digital formats. 
  • Irregular working hours 

What you'll bring:

  • Demonstrable experience of managing colleagues in an editorial environment  
  • A successful track record as a TV news field producer. 
  • Substantial experience of digital news production and workflow. 
  • Understanding of and experience in working in hostile environments. 
  • Evidence of editorial judgement, factual accuracy, and journalistic enterprise. 
  • Ability to make contacts and manage stakeholder relationships that benefit Sky News
  • Knowledge and expertise in North American politics, society and culture. 
  • Excellent appreciation of the ever-changing media world and requirements of cross-platform news delivery for a range of audiences.  
  • The ability to find news from a diverse range of sources. 
  • Strong planning, organisational and logistical skills. 
  • First class communication and collaboration skills. 
  • Strong understanding of media law and UK and US compliance regulations.
