We have an exciting opportunity for a newsgathering Producer to work in our Security and Defence Bureau. The successful candidate will be based in London and will work with our Security and Defence Editor, Deborah Haynes.
It’s a vital role, anchored in the Sky News international team, but working across the UK operation too. The successful candidate will work as a travelling producer, with experience of hostile environments, and will have both output and digital experience.
A background in investigative journalism is welcome as is a keen interest in and knowledge of defence and security issues. Political and geopolitical awareness is crucial given the current global situation. The team has travelled to both Israel and Ukraine in recent times.
This role includes irregular hours and travel, often at short notice when reacting to breaking news and including hostile environments.
What you'll do:
Day to day editorial leadership of the Sky News Security and Defence Bureau; playing a key influencing role with TV and digital production staff to ensure we are making the most of our content.
Daily contact with planning and news desks to plan and execute coverage.
Collaboration with colleagues on coverage across Sky News platforms.
TV package, digital content, podcast, and written production.
Investigations, contact-driven and/or drawing on open-source intelligence.
Stay abreast of significant defence and security developments.
Management of travel, budget and logistics.
Investing in long form and other innovative broadcast and digital formats.
What you'll bring:
Demonstrable experience of collaborating with colleagues in an editorial environment.
A successful track record as a TV news field producer, including hostile environments.
Substantial experience of digital news production and workflow, including podcasts.
Knowledge of newsgathering through open source intelligence.
Evidence of editorial judgement, factual accuracy, and journalistic enterprise.
Knowledge and expertise in defence, security and geopolitics desirable.
Excellent appreciation of the ever-changing media world and requirements of cross-platform news delivery for a range of audiences.
The ability to find news from a diverse range of sources.
Strong planning, organisational and logistical skills.
First class communication and collaboration skills.
Strong understanding of media law and UK compliance regulations.
